About the Demo
Recorded on-the-spot in j. Christian Miller's patent-applied-for NO-FI production aesthetic (that's a joke!), this demo really captures the moment. Features an un-plugged feel with minimal guitars and one vocal take which features a prominent phone ringing in the project studio out on Persimmon (Georgia, Southern Appalachia, USA!). With all its faults, the production still captures the song, Chris claims was written from a composite of things people randomly said to him over the last few years. "It all seemed to turn out about a girl... Pretty Penny is her name....." the 42 year old author, singer/songwriter and guitarist further notes on the songwriting process. He goes on, "You'll never guess who she really is, but I will never tell," lending allure to the whole process of what makes this creative lifestyler tick. I walked the long road since that night.
I wondered how you've been.
Did you find what you were lookin' for?
Are you holding him?

Everything I left behind
I never really owned.
I was watchin' for anyone
on the road I wandered on.

You say it's a joke.
You say you'll do what you want.
Pretty Penny,
the price you'll pay.
You think it's funny
But not for love o' money
would you sell me
what you give away.

You say there's just no compromise
but that we can still be friends.
I miss so bad lookin' into your eyes
like I know you're doin' him.

Tell the children not to waste their time.
You can find no value in it.
Tell them I don't live here
'casue I somehow don't fit.

You say it's a joke.
You say you'll do what you want.
Pretty Penny,
the price you'll pay.
You think it's funny
But not for love o' money
would you sell me
what you give away.

If I could do it over...
Do you "this I swear"?
Put your love back in your pocket
Carry it far away from here.

And you find no time to talk -
that it's easy to walk away.
I'll carry the thorn in my heart
to my dyin' day. I love you anyway...

You say it's a joke.
You say you'll do what you want.
Pretty Penny,
the price you'll pay.
You think it's funny
But not for love o' money
would you sell me
what you give away.

I changed your name.
Your secrets are all safe.
I'll carry them
to the grave.
I changed your name.
Your secrets are all safe...
